Luz Kinilaw

My annual vacation with the old school gang took us this time to Davao City, and we landed just before lunchtime.  Since we were all famished (we were up at 4am to make it to NAIA Terminal 2 in time for the 9am flight), we headed straight to the famous carinderia of Davao--Luz Kinilaw Place!  The place hasn't changed much from what I remember it used to look like when I first visited Davao in 1990.

We were lucky that seating was readily available when we arrived.  We just had to order tuna kinilaw (which is raw tuna, ginger and onions bathed in vinegar), the specialty of the place.  The vinegar cooks the meat and gives a tangy zing to the dish.  We also ordered grilled squid, and an assortment of grilled tuna delicacies (I hope I get this right)--panga (jaw), ubol-ubol (esophagus), bihod (roe), and bagaybay (penis).

With a couple of San Miguel Lights each, we were soon off to a merry start!  The feast cost us something like P250 per head, which was very reasonable compared to Manila standards.
