Blade Runner

For me, the most haunting image of the London 2012 Olympic games is none other than that of South African runner Oscar Pistorius (nicknamed "Blade Runner"), competing in the 400 meter event.  He is a double amputee running on carbon fiber "Cheetah" legs, the first to compete against able-bodied athletes.  He is a speed fanatic, plays rugby and water polo, and dreams of driving for Ferrari.  Despite not making it to the semi-finals, his presence in the regular Olympics (he has regularly participated in the Paralympics) is already a victory in itself.  The UK Sun, from which this picture is taken, reports that this man's battle for personal recognition arising from frustration has turned into a symbolic struggle against discrimination.  His participation has captured the world's heart, and as such, it looks like the human spirit is on a winning streak!
